maaaeh a.k.a. sheep shearing

Genau wie im letzten Jahr (hier und hier) war ich dieses Jahr wieder beim Schafe scheren dabei. Beim ersten Schertag hatte ich meine Kamera vergessen und beim 2. Mal war ich so spaet dran, dass das Scheren schon vorbei war, aber Bilder machen konnten wir trotzdem noch.

Just like last year (here and here) I went to see the sheep shearing. The first day I forgot my camera and the second time I came so late the actual shearing was already over but I did take pictures anyways.

Und ich freundete mich mit Rolf Bifrostsson, einem 5jaehrigen Clun Forest Schafbock an. Er ist ein sehr freundliches und zutrauliches Schaf und wackelt mit dem Schwanz, wenn man ihm den Kopf krault! / I made friends with Rolf Bifrostsson, a 5 year old Clun Forst ram. He is a very friendly sheep and waggles with his tail when you tickle his head.

Der Hauptgrund fuer den diesjaehrigen Besuch war der Bedarf eines frisch geschorenen Schafvlieses fuer den “Wool Judging” Kurs im Juni, aber es war eigentlich klar, dass es nicht bei einem Vlies bleiben wuerde. Zumindest sind es keine 5 wie letztes Jahr Ausgezogen wurden fuer mich Virginia (Suedafrikanisches Fleisch-Merino), Persephone (graues Cotswold) und Veronica (naturschwarzes Shetland-Cotswold-Mix ohne Braunstich).

The main reason for this year’s visit was my demand for a freshly shorn fleece for my “wool judging” class in June but it kind of was clear that it would be more than one. At least there were not 5 like last year Virginia (South-African Meat Merino), Persephone (natural grey Cotswold) and Veronica (natural black Shetland-Cotswold-Mix without any brown) got undressed for me.

Handgefaerbtes & Ravelympics / handdyed stuff & Ravelympics

Ich bin natuerlich auch nicht an den Ravelympics vorbeigekommen und mache mit. Mein olympisches Projekt ist “Slipped Hours” von Gudrun Johnson. Ich verstricke mein selbstgefaerbtes Garn von einer der letzten Faerbeaktionen und hoffe, dass ich genug habe. Viel sieht man noch nicht und ich bin mir auch nicht sicher, ob ich es wirklich bis Sonntagabend schaffe, aber ich bin guter Dinge. Selbst wenn ich es nicht bis zur Abschlusszeremonie schaffe, waere das mein “schnellster” Pullover bisher.

I couldn’t avoid the Ravelympics too and I’m participating. My olympic project is “Slipped Hours” from Gudrun Johnson. I’m knitting my own handdyed yarn from one of the last dye sessions and hope that I will have enough yarn to finish. There is not much to see yet and I’m not sure if I actually can finish it until Sunday but even if I don’t it will be my “fastest” sweater up to date.

Personal Sock Club 1/2010

2010 laeuft bei mir bisher ganz nach dem Motto “Nutze was Du hast” und in der Ravelry-Gruppe “Stash Knit Down” ist die Rede vom “Personal Sock Club”. Zum Zusammenstellen der Sockenwollen und Mustern bin ich nicht wirklich gekommen, aber ich habe ein Paar Drachensocken in 6fach gestrickt und entschieden, dass ich einfach jeden Monat einen Strang Clownk*tze *sehr bunte Wolle* (Edit: das ist auf keinen Fall abwertend gemeint, nicht dass sich jemand auf den Schlips getreten fuehlt ) aus meinem Stash aussuchen und schlicht & einfach in glatt rechts verstricken werde. Das Leben ist gerade kompliziert genug, da geniesse ich einfaches Stricken.

So far my 2010 has the motto “Use what you have” and in the Ravelry group “Stash Knit Down” there are some threads about a “Personal Sock Club”. I didn’t have the patience yet to go through my stash and pick sock yarn and patterns for my own club but I did knit a pair of simple stockinette socks in Drachenwolle and decided that instead I will choose one skein of clownbarf sock yarn from my stash each month and will knit plain socks. Life is complicated right now, so I enjoy simple, mindless knitting.

Die freie Zeit zwischen den Jahren habe ich genutzt und mal wieder gefaerbt Worsted weight Garn mit Luvotex-Farben. Interessant finde ich mal wieder wie unterschiedlich die Straenge aus ein und dem selben Faerbebad sind. Ich hab’ verschiedene Farben gemischt und mit Schwarz abgedunkelt. Keine Ahnung, ob es daran liegt, dass Luvotex ja aus Pigmenten besteht. Ich werde das gleiche Rezept vermutlich nochmal mit anderen Saeurefarben austesten. Und in dem Moment, in dem ich diesen Blogpost schreibe, steht schon wieder der naechste Faerbetopf auf dem Herd, diesmal mit was blutrotem

I used the time off between the years and dyed again. Worsted weight yarn with Luvotex colours. I find it very interesting how different the skeins are from the same dye bath. I mixed some colours and darkened with black. I don’t know if it is because Luvotex are pigment colours. I’ll try the same recipe with some other acid colours some day. And right now, when I’m writing this blog post, I have the next dye pot on the stove, this time with something bloodred

Auf dem obersten Bild kann man die Unterschiede ganz gut erkennen. Die Farbe entspricht aber eher den beiden unteren Photos.

The first picture shows the differences quite good but the colour is more correct on the two other ones.

Stash?!

Dass Stashenthusiasmus abfaerbt erkennt man daran, wenn der Holzwurm mit den Armen voller Wolle in den Keller kommt und sagt (wortwoertliches Zitat): “Ich muss mal noch meinen STASH in MEINE Kiste packen!” *lol*

You can see that stash enthusiasm is rubbing of on someone when the Woodworm is coming in the basement with the arms full of yarn and saying (literally): “I should put my STASH in MY bin!” *lol*

Reparieren oder neu? / Repair or new?

Wie schon in meinem vorherigen Post erwaehnt, nehmen meine tragbaren Stricksocken langsam ab, da einige nun so Stueck fuer Stueck ihre Schwachstellen, vorzugsweise an den Zehen, zeigen. Dieses Jahr bin ich ziemlich langsam mit fertigen Strickobjekten und so kommt es, dass ich gerade an Paar Nr. 5 stricke. Noch mindestens ein 6. Paar muesste ich stricken, um die kaputten Paare auszutauschen. Ich habe von Anfang an meiner Sockenstrickkarriere saemtliche Sockenwollreste aufgehoben und so kam mir die Idee, dass ich ja eigentlich meine Socken mit Originalwolle in Form von Zehen neu stricken reparieren koennte. Das wuerde schneller zu Ergebnissen fuehren als 6 neue Paare zu stricken.

Like I mentioned in my previous post my wearable handknit socks kind of decrease because one after another starts falling apart, mostly at the toes. This year I’m pretty slow with my knitting and I’m currently knitting on pair no. 5. I need to knit at least a 6th pair to substitute all the broken pairs I have. I kept all the sock yarn leftovers right when I started knitting socks and I got the idea I could just repair them and reknit the toes. This would be faster than knitting 6 new pairs.

Wie macht Ihr das? Ich hab’ das Problem, dass ich die kaputten Socken nicht wirklich entsorgen moechte, weil ich sie eben selbst gestrickt habe. Auf der anderen Seite ist es mit einem Sockenwollstash, der fuer ein xxx-faches an Socken reichen wuerde, sinnvoller, einfach mal aus dem Stash auszusuchen und neue Socken zu stricken.

How do you do that? I have the problem that I don’t really want to throw the broken socks out because I did knit them. On the other side with a sock yarn stash that would last for xxx-times pairs it might make more sense to just chose something from stash and knit new ones.

Langsam ernaehrt sich das Eichhoernchen oder so aehnlich… ich stricke tatsaechlich noch und kriege ab und zu auch was fertig.

Sheep Shearing II

Am Samstag waren wir das zweite Mal bei der Schafschur dabei. Diesmal war es anfangs ziemlich windig und wir sind nicht ganz so lange geblieben wie beim ersten Mal. Ich habe die beiden Vliese, die ich mir reservieren lassen hatte, und noch ein drittes, bei dem ich nicht widerstehen konnte, mitgenommen.

Last Saturday we were at the sheep shearing a second time. This time it was pretty windy at the beginning and we weren’t as long as last week. I picked up the two fleeces for which were spoken for me and another one which I couldn’t resist buying.

Von den Vliesen der letzten Woche, Columbia und Cotswold, habe ich bereits einige Fasern gewaschen und angesponnen. Ich habe mit der Handspindel gesponnen und es hat das erste Mal richtig gut funktioniert (ich habe damals gleich mit dem Spinnrad angefangen).

I already washed and spun a few fibres of the two fleeces from last week, the Columbia and the Cotswold. I tried spinning with a spindle and it was the first time that the spinning with a handspindle worked out for me

Ausserdem ist die Wolle fuer “Norah is going Elsewhere” fertig gesponnen, so dass ich mich bald ans Faerben machen kann. Am Wochenende habe ich eine Version der Jacke gesehen, die mir sehr gut gefallen hat und die mir erlauben wuerde, beide Rotvarianten zu verwenden

Sheep Shearing Days

Heute sind wir zusammen mit Kathleen zur Sommer Farm in Crossfield, nur eine gute halbe Stunde Autofahrt entfernt, gefahren, trafen noch mehr Freunde und haben fast den ganzen Tag damit verbracht, Schafe auszusuchen, denen man an die Wolle moechte, beim Scheren zuzuschauen, die Vliese zu sortieren, Katzen und Hunde streicheln, gruene Grashalme zu entdecken (Fruehling!) und sich den ersten Sonnenbrand des Jahres zu holen.

Today we went together with Kathleen to the Sommer Farm in Crossfield, just half an hour driving away from home, met more friends and spent almost the whole day with picking the sheep from which we wanted the wool, watching the shearing, skirting fleeces, cuddling cats and dogs, discover some green grass (Spring!) and getting the first sunburn of the year.

“Guck’, ich bin n*ckig!” / “Look, I’m n*ked!”

Mir gefaellt der Gedanke, dass das Schaf, dessen Wolle ich verarbeiten werde, einen Namen hat. Die Schafzuechterin als auch die Schererin spinnen beide selbst und es ist immer wieder schoen zu sehen, dass andere genauso so fuehlen und denken, wenn’s um Wolle geht.

I like the thought that the sheep whose wool I’ll process has actually a name. The sheep farmer and the shearer are both spinners and it’s always nice to see that others feel the same when it comes to wool.

Naechsten Samstag ist der 2. Termin fuer’s Schafe scheren auf dieser Farm und dann geht es dem Rest an die Wolle. Ich werde wieder hinfahren und mir dieses Mal das Vlies eines grauen Shetlandschafes (Shauna?) und eines multicolour-grauen Islandschafes (Name ist mir noch unbekannt) mitbringen. Denkt Ihr, ich bin verrueckt? Nein, ich denke nicht, dass ich verrueckt bin. Ich bin nur high, high in fiber

Next Saturday is the second day for the shearing at the farm and all left sheep will be shorn. I’ll be there again and this time I’ll pick up a grey Shetland sheep fleece (Shauna?) and a multicolour greyish Icelandic sheep (I don’t know the name yet). Do you think I’m crazy? No, I don’t think I am. I’m just high, high in fiber

Faerbeexperimente / dyeing experiments

Ich denke, jede(r) Stricker/in mit einem Stash, der groesser ist als ihre zur Verfuegung stehende Strickzeit im naechsten halben Jahr, hat ein paar Knaeule, die ihr/ihm nicht mehr oder nicht mehr ganz so gut gefallen, schon weil sich der Geschmack mit der Zeit aendert. So ging es auch mir und deshalb habe ich am Wochenende etwas dagegen getan.

I think almost every knitter with a stash for more than the next half a year has some skeins that she (or he) doesn’t like that much anymore. So am I and last weekend I did something.

Das sind die haesslichen Ausgangsknaeule, bei denen ich mich am Ende gefragt habe, warum ich die eigentlich gekauft habe:

Ich habe mich an den Ausgangsfarben orientiert und habe das Farbthema beibehalten.

Mir gefallen sie sehr gut und die Farbmischungen fuer das Rot und das Gruen werde ich auch noch mal auf ungefaerbtem Garn oder Fasern austesten (ich notiere mir immer, was ich zusammenmixe, um Farben reproduzieren zu koennen).

I like them much more now and will use the mixure for the red and the green with undyed fibres again (I’m making notes about my mixures of dyeing to re-produce colors I like).

Ansonsten macht mir grad die Zeitumstellung auf Sommerzeit zu schaffen, die hier schon am letzten Wochenende war. Im Moment haben wir naemlich nur 7 Stunden Zeitverschiebung zu Deutschland. So, nun ist meine Mittagspause gleich vorbei…

Besides that I don’t like the time change to the daylight savings time. Because of the earlier time change we now have only 7 hours difference to Germany. So, lunch break is over…
